Kabyle, Chaoui, Rifian: speaking Tamazight to the people who speak it

“Tamazight” is not just one more language on a list: it is a family of languages spoken by millions of people in the Maghreb and the diaspora — Kabyle in Kabylie and in Paris, Chaoui in the Aurès, Rifian in the Rif and in Brussels, Tachelhit in the Souss, the Tamazight of the Middle Atlas. Tamazight is an official language in Algeria and Morocco. And yet a brand selling in Tizi Ouzou, Béjaïa or Nador almost always speaks in darija, French or Standard Arabic.
Why darija isn't enough
A Kabyle speaker understands Algerian darija. But it doesn't reach them in the same way. A grandmother in Kabylie hears Kabyle; a family in Nador hears Rifian. A video that speaks their language, at home, in their own words, is not “one more video”: it is the first time a brand has addressed them directly. The effect is the same as darija compared with Standard Arabic — only stronger, because it is rarer.
Three things to know before filming
- Kabyle, Chaoui, Rifian and Tachelhit are not interchangeable. A video in Kabyle is not “a video in Tamazight” that works in the Rif. As with darija: one dialect per video.
- The creator must be a native speaker, not just someone “with roots there”. Many young people in the diaspora understand Kabyle without speaking it fluently; you can hear it within ten seconds.
- Subtitles are essential: the brand doesn't understand the video, and part of the audience reads better than it listens. Two tracks: the spoken language (in tifinagh or Latin script, depending on what the audience uses) and French.
What we do at ASLI
- Tamazight is a language option in its own right in the brief, not an “other” box.
- Creators record a short sample in each language they list; the team listens to it before displaying “accent verified”.
- A video in Kabyle is reviewed by someone who speaks Kabyle.
Speaking Tamazight to the people who speak it isn't a niche: it is a whole audience nobody has served yet.
ASLI is a UGC platform for brands that speak to the Maghreb and its diaspora: creators who film in their own language — in the Maghreb, Qatar, Canada and Europe — for brands that want to speak rather than translate. Write to us
